Flushing Restaurant Inspections Reveal Common Violations

In the last two weeks, 149 restaurants in the Flushing area underwent health inspections, revealing a range of compliance levels and common violations. Of these establishments, 40 received an 'A' grade, while 22 were marked with a 'Z', indicating significant issues, and 15 received an 'N' grade, which denotes a need for improvement.

The most frequently cited violations included issues with non-food contact surfaces, which were either made from unacceptable materials or not kept clean, with 16 occurrences noted. Additionally, 14 establishments failed to properly wash, rinse, and sanitise food contact surfaces after use. There were also 13 reports of establishments being infested or having conditions conducive to pests such as rodents and insects. Other critical violations included hot food items not being held at the required temperature of at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit, which was noted in 11 cases, and cold food items being held above the safe temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit, reported in 8 instances.

Several popular restaurants were among those inspected. 'NORTHERN 160' had the highest number of violations, totalling 18, while 'U BEST BAKERY' and 'MAMA PIZZA' followed with 13 and 10 violations, respectively. Notably, 'THE ATTIC', a seafood restaurant, was flagged for critical violations concerning shellfish sourcing and tagging.

The inspections also highlighted a concerning presence of pests. Eight establishments were noted for having filth flies or other nuisance pests, while six reported live roaches in food or non-food areas. These findings raise concerns about food safety and hygiene practices in the local dining scene.

The inspections covered a variety of cuisines, with Korean restaurants being the most frequently inspected, accounting for 42 of the records. Bakery products and desserts were also well represented, with 34 inspections. The geographical distribution of the inspections showed that the majority occurred in the 11354 and 11355 zip codes, with Northern Boulevard being the most inspected street.

As residents continue to enjoy the diverse culinary offerings in Flushing, these inspection results serve as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the need for restaurants to maintain high standards of cleanliness and compliance.
